Seahorses are all endangered species. Didn't CITIES decide to list all seahorses as endangered back in November 2002? Now I read that only h. capensis (sp?) is actually on the endangered species list.
No. As far as I know only H. capensis is on the "endangered" list. The other seahorse species are on the Red List, and most are considered "vulnerable", mostly due to "actual or potential exploitation."

In November 2002 the 12th meeting of the Conference of Parties (COP) to the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Wildlife Flauna and Flora (CITES) voted to list all Hippocampus speces on Appendix II of CITES. The actual listing will not fully come into effect until about 18 months after the end date of the meeting - eg Mid May 2004.

This listing will have an impact on harvesting seahorses from the wild. The listing basically means that if collection is detrimental to wild populations it is not allowed to happen. Most countries around the world have agreed to support and recognise the listing in regards to importation and exportation of seahorses.

You can access further information on the listing at the www.cities.org web site.
