My seahorse won't eat! The fish store said it will eat [frozen] brine shrimp but it hasn't eaten in days! What can I feed my seahorse?
You need to get your seahorse eating as soon as possible. Seahorses have a very short digestive system and need to feed frequently or their system shuts down. However, the food recommended to you by your store is most likely not appropriate for your seahorse. If you got it from a pet store, chances are it is Wild Caught, and does not recognize that frozen food is in fact food. Many seahorses won't recognize even live brine shrimp as food. Even captive bred seahorses sometimes go off their feed occassionally, and need live food to bring back their feeding response.
So what do you feed them? You can try live enriched brine, but most won't eat it. Other things to try are live red shrimp, live mysis shrimp, live ghost shrimp, larval food shrimp, and live amphipods. Some of these things can be purchased from your fish store. Some you may be able to collect from local waters. And some you may need to mail order from the internet. Red shrimp, available through http://www.oceanrider.com, are rarely refused by seahorses. You can often also find live amphipods or mysis shrimp in established aquariums in either refugiums or filter pads. Sometimes you can convince your fish store to look in their tanks for these items. Whatever you do, be sure to get them eating FAST, before they become so weak they can't eat. Related Topics:
