First, heat and aerate approximately a gallon or so of freshwater (RO or treated tapwater -- whatever you typically use before adding the salt mix). Match the water temperature and the pH to the water the horse is currently in.
When the temp and pH are the same as the horse's water, place the horse in the dip. A minimum of 5 minutes is recommended to have a beneficial impact. If the horse is doing okay, and does not have an adverse reaction to the dip, prolong the dip for up to 10 minutes.
The first time can be a little nervewracking, but once you get the hang of it, FW dipping is not so bad.
Dipping can/should also be done on a new horse prior to introduction to your tank to help with any possible parasites the horse may have. It can also be useful at any time if parasites are suspected. Also, the addition of Formalin or methylene blue to the dip can increase the effectiveness. Related Topics:
